Stone wool insulation is made from naturally occurring basalt rock and slag, a by-product of the steel industry, giving it high density to maintain its shape and R-value for years, while competing products may shrink and lose R value over time.
Outside of North America, stone wool is one of the most popular and widely-used insulation products that have been used for over 50 years.
All of this begs the question, “Why has it taken North America so long to adopt stone wool insulation?” Our hypothesis is that there are a few common misconceptions about stone/mineral wool insulation.
One of the most admirable qualities of ROXUL stone wool products is its water repellent nature. When water comes into contact with ROXUL stone wool insulation, it immediately runs off. And yet, some people have been under the impression that mineral wool insulation performs poorly after being exposed to water. We believe this myth has grown from homeowners’ experience with fiberglass batt insulation. Fiberglass batt insulation begins to slump in the wall cavity once it’s exposed to condensation or water from any source. The result is that its R-Value (ability to insulate) is reduced significantly.
By contrast, when ROXUL’s acoustic insulation (ROXULSAFE’n’SOUND®) or its thermal insulation (ROXUL COMFORTBATT® ) become exposed to water, they will ultimately dry completely. There is no lasting reduction in R-Value, despite being exposed to the elements.
One of the unique features of mineral wool insulation is that it is very open to vapor flow. Most of the volume of stone wool insulation is actually air–so water vapor can navigate through it quite easily. Other foam insulation products have built-in vapor resistance. But this feature actually impedes the foam insulations’ ability to dry when exposed to moisture.
We know that absorbed moisture in your insulation can lead to a reduction of R-Value. But trapped moisture can also promote the growth of mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria. These harmful substances create a lingering health hazard and can diminish the performance of your project.
Luckily, ROXUL SAFE’n’SOUND® acoustic insulation and ROXUL COMFORTBATT® thermal insulation are water repellent and chemically inert–so it will not promote the growth of mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria.
