In this video, we show the Heat Recovery Unit (HRU) from Doucette Industries, connected to a Trane 410a refrigerant, 4 ton, XL20i condensing unit, capable of achieving SEER ratings up to 20 SEER. We first tested the HRU with the A/C set just one degree below house temperature, so that only the 2 ton compressor would run. Later, we tested the HRU with the A/C set 7 degrees lower than house temperature so the 4 ton compressor ran instead of the 2 ton. The results are that in fact you can benefit from a HRU regardless of SEER, type of refrigerant, and can work on two compressor applications. It also removed a good 25 degrees or more before the condensing coils begin the process of removing heat, thus making the A/C system much more efficient. Depending on climate, and actual kilowatt cost, you can save between $10 to $15 a month per person on water heating.
This is simple project to turn an inexpensive ice chest cooler into a super cooler similar to the expensive Yeti style coolers. The project can be done for less than $5 using any good ice cooler, some polyfoam insulation, and some silicon sealant. Note: use only 100% silicon designed for fridges and food safe.
