We do a lot of stained concrete floor installations and often come up with situations where our floors butt up to other areas that have carpet, tile, or wood all of which may have different heights. This can leave an exposed edge that can be unsightly. To cover this up a flooring transition strip usually made up of either wood, metal, or plastic can be used. We can do this installation for a small additional charge, but often our clients want to save a little money and do it themselves. So just how do you go about with the installation of a flooring transition strip on concrete?
The first step is to select the type of transition strip you want. There are many materials, styles and colors available. We prefer wood as it often complements our stained concrete floor installations. You also need to select the right type, there are ones that are for carpet to linoleum, carpet to wood, wood to wood, tile to tile, etc. Some transitions are just relatively flat strips that when installed have a slight angle to them. This is the one shown in the video. Others are designed to sit flat to the floor but have a lip with different thicknesses on each side of the strip so that it can cover up the height difference between the two floors. Make sure to also pick up the dowel kit (basically small wood cylinders) specifically for installation on concrete floors, these are normally sold separately so don’t forget them.
The next step in our installation of a flooring transition strip on concrete is to cut it to length. It should just fit in the doorway. We then cut the carpet underpad back a little so that the edge transition piece will grip just the edge of the carpet itself. If we try to include the underpad with the carpet under this particular type of flooring transition strip it tends to make it angle up quite a bit, to the point where it might actually become a tripping hazard which is why we just want to clamp only the carpet itself (keep in mind that other styles of transition strips may not require this, always read the instructions). Next we drop the transition strip back over the carpet, align it exactly where we want it to go and use a hammer drill with a small, usually 1/8″ masonry drill bit to open up a pilot hole using the existing screw holes in the transition strip as a guide. This is the easiest and fastest way to line up exactly where the holes need to be in the concrete floor without damaging the transition strip, you don’t need to drill deep, just enough to mark the concrete for the larger hole that is to follow. You also don’t need to have a hammer drill but you will definitely notice the difference in how easy it is to open these holes up compared to a regular drill.
Once we have drilled the pilot holes in our installation of a flooring transition strip on concrete project completed we return with a larger masonry bit (make sure it is a masonry bit, otherwise you are just wasting your time, regular bits can’t drill concrete-too hard) usually 5/16″ to 7/16″ in diameter depending on what the instructions with the dowel kit say. Drill to the correct depth, vacuum out any debris in the hole that might prevent the dowel from sitting down completely in there and then carefully hammer each dowel into the hole until it is just flush with the top of the concrete floor. It should be a tight fit.
The last step in our installation of a flooring transition strip on concrete process is to align the transition strip over the holes and gently screw it down. If you did everything right it should align perfectly and the strip will clamp down tightly over the carpet and hold it firmly in place, covering up the exposed edge. Well that’s all to it. As always, use common sense and the right protective gear so that you don’t hurt yourself or others during the installation and thank you for taking the time to visit with us.
