Another video from Aquatics Live 2012 show in London. This time I show a very interesting small aquarium exhibition, made by members of Hounslow and District Aquarist Society. I saw such exhibition for the first time in my life – it was the exhibition of various methods of breeding tropical aquarium fish! Great idea, and very informative. The first aquarium demonstrated how to breed killifish – there were two spawning mops in the aquarium. The second aquarium was a typical setup for breeding egg scatterers, like most danios, for example. There was a layer of glass marbles on the bottom, which prevents the eggs from being eaten by the parents. The third tank was an example of breeding egg scatterers in a more “planted” way – I mean, in an aquarium with plants and decorations. It is sufficient to grow a lawn of low plants on the bottom for some eggs to remain undetected by the parents, and some nice fine-leaved higher plants, for the small fry to hide inside. Not as effective as the previous method with marbles, but at least the aquarium looks better with plants The third tank was for breeding livebearers, like guppies and mollies. It’s enough to leave some fine-leaved plants in the tank, for the fry to hide from the parents after being born. The fourth tank was about breeding Cichlids and other fry-caring tropical aquarium fish. This is why there was an artificial cave in the tank – place for the parents to lay their eggs. And finally, the last tank demonstrated the method for breeding labirynth fish, which build a foam nest on the water surface. There should be some support for the nest provided, like floating plants (Riccia, Limnobium, Pistia) or fragments of styrofoam. After breeding it’s best to remove the female, as the male takes care for developing youngsters and tries to chase the female away.
