It’s no secret, an athlete’s body gear is not the most pleasant thing to smell after practice or a game. A Utah engineer is changing that, one invention at a time.
Walk inside the lab at Go Engineer and you’ll see hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of 3D printers at work making a wide variety of products.
But there is one kind of mold they are making for a new invention that the developer believes can change the world when it comes to foam products. It’s called x-bands.
Kevin Shelley is the product designer and inventor of this new technology that is made with hundreds of little follicles. This allows for the product to breathe, and when worn, it will not get hot, sweaty or smelly.
“We have the qualities of foam that we want, meaning it’s comfortable and shock-absorbing, but without any of the heat and sweat that comes with it,” he said.
This could be a major game changer for athletic gear made out of foam, from football shoulder pads to soccer shin guards, or even padded clothing for hockey.
“Foam is a world class insulator. We use it in our houses. Does an athlete want to be all hot and sweaty?” Shelley asked.
He is no newcomer to the 3D product design world and to inventing things. For 18 years he ran the largest special-effects studio in the country in New York. His face and name appeared in many major articles and reports.
His 3D design work even helped bring the dinosaurs to life in the original “Jurassic Park” film and also played a role in other Hollywood movies such as “Batman Returns.”
Shelley believes the potential for his product is limitless. He has already sold it to military personal for camouflage equipment. He says that this is just the beginning. Now, it’s just a matter of deciding which direction to go next.
“Either we can create a bunch of products under the x-band brand or we license the technology to existing brand names,” Shelley said.
Shelley is hoping to create the next Gore Tex-like product in protective gear. The consumer product he has right now is the x-band for hunters using camouflage to cover themselves up.
