Taiwan has launched its first sailboat made entirely from plastic bottles and recycled materials to celebrate the World Ocean Day.
Forever, a trimaran sail boat which is seven-metres long and five-metres wide, is made from over 700 hundreds plastic bottles and other recycled materials.
The boat’s sails are made from recycled canvas and some parts of the boat’s structure are made from a combination of recycled plastic and waste wood chips.
The boat uses wind power to sail and can be switched to run on an engine powered by solar energy from the panel on the hull.
“The whole concept behind this boat is using all the recycling materials and also trash and remaking it into a brand new boat,” said Alex Chou, the industrial designer engineer for Sustainable Energy Development Company and the designer of the sailboat.
To strengthen the structure of the boat, the recycled bottles were remould into a shape of hexagonal cells and each attached to others to form a honeycomb shape.
Chou’s company said the design of the shape made the materials much stronger, strong enough to pass the country’s safety and quality test to be used as building materials.
Using different materials in making the boat did not make the sailing experience of the sailors any different from their previous sailing trips.
“I have sailed for many years but this is the first time that I have sailed in an environmentally friendly boat … the idea is different but the principle of the boat is the same,” said Chung Jian Rong, an amateur sailor from Taiwan.
Forever is also set to sail across Taiwan in the near future to showcase green technology.
