Day 5: Now that the Corroseal rust converter was completely dried, we were able to start patching the nail, bolt, and rust holes in the floor. We picked up a 12 pack of Loctite PL Premium polyurethane construction adhesive and used this to fill the smaller holes. For larger holes, we used leftover flashing from Big’s dad and adhered these pieces to the floor with Loctite. The flashing had some memory to it, so it’s important to place heavy objects on top of the flashing after placement so the Loctite has time to set and cure.
During downtime, we headed over to our local hardware store to pick up plywood, MDF, and insulation for the next step in our bus conversion. We opted to have Home Depot cut most of the plywood and MDF for us – it’s free for the first 2 cuts, then 50 cents after. Totally worth it.
Big trimmed the 3″ strips of MDF according to the floor plan he and I put together before heading to the hardware store. To save time and money, DO THIS! Hannah and I laid the studs down (after we made sure everything fit correctly) and adhered them with more Loctite. In hindsight, we were a little too liberal with Loctite application – and while we got a bulk discount, this stuff ain’t cheap! Anyway, the studs are nice and secure now.
Day 6: After studs were in place, weighed down with heavy objects, and allowed to cure overnight, we worked on cutting insulation foam boards and plywood subfloors this day. We used a box cutter and pocket knife to cut the foam boards and stuck them in place with more Loctite. Measure twice, cut once, folks! Or in our case, measure twice, cut once, it’s still not the right size, measure again, cut again, repeat….
Not pictured due to poor “footage” was Big screwing in the first piece of plywood subfloor between the wheel wells. He also didn’t have shoes on while doing this – don’t try this at home, kids! He used 1 1/4 inch square wood screws and a Milwaukee drill and drilled into the studs we had laid the night before. See below for tools used!
